The problem is that driving instructors working as part of a company are judged on the pass rate of their pupils, so they're bound to be more leniant. But then those who work independantly are paid per lesson so they'll want to keep giving each person lessons for as long as possible.
That makes no sense, your driving instructor and your examiner have nothing to do with each other.

I think she was pointed out how having an instructor decide when you were ready, rather than putting people in an exam situation, wouldn't necessary work

THing is though, most instructors do anyway, its usually them that tell you to go for your exam.. Sure, some people do it off their own backs, but I'd imagine the majority are taking their instructors recommendations.
Suffice to say, any who did rip people off wouldn't remain in business long, since most of them tend to be booked by word of mouth. (After havihng searched online, I doubt the majority don't get bookings from their websites, since they are utter dogshite in 90% of the cases.)

Fail 3 driving tests and have your licence to learn revoked. By then it's pretty clear that you should not be behind the wheel of a car. That old bint who passed after 28 tests being on the roads is not exactly a promotion of active road safety.
I know I've missed the boat but SO much wrong with this. I passed on my fourth try and the previous three were failures for stupid things, such as getting too close to a parked car when the examiner had taken me down a street where there were so many cars that it was either that or cross the central line, which was also a fail. I know I'm a better driver for having taken 4 attempts to pass. And my bloke's sister took 7 goes and is THE safest driver you could ever meet. Meanwhile both my cousins passed first time and have totalled at least 3 cars between them. You don't learn to drive until you pass your test anyway, so no matter how many times you take it it's not got any bearing on your safety as a qualified driver, because you don't have a man next to you with access to a footbreak, you have to do it all by yourself. Aside from all that imposing a cut off that early would just have so many people shitting it they'd fail because of the nerves. Yes, 28 is too much but saying 3 and you're out is just silly, sorry.

i've never bothered with a serious crack at driving. i took about 11 lessons when i was 17 and decided it wasn't something that i wanted to do at that point in life. i'll have a go next summer, possibly. besides, motorbikes are infinitely superior for someone who doesn't need to carry anything about (if i go to the shops, i walk. if i go to work, i get the bus/train to avoid parking costs).
i've driven cars on private land since, albeit it very slowly, just to get the basics rooted in my head.

I doubt highly you would pass first time, it's f*cking hard. The list of criteria you have to meet is f*cking ridiculous. After phaillllling, you would probably think differently. Motorbikes are cool though, bloke's Dad has two, they're preeeettty.

Aye, i've heard about what they've done to make the test harder in recent years. Seems like a load of old b*ll*cks with no point other than to gain extra test revenue, tbh.

Yeah, hence not fair to failers to ban them from being able to try again, as they're only allowed to pass a certain amount of people per day anyway and you could just be unlucky and fail all three times despite doing f all wrong.

Yup. The first time pass rate is only 17% anyway, and the overall pass rate is something like 48%. They must be raking it in on failed tests, seeing as they're £56 a pop...

Yeah plus the two hours you have to pay your instructor for practise before the test and hire of the car for the test. Expensive business. I deserve my license just for the fact it cost me over £200 to get it (excluding 4 years of driving lessons).
